I am Simon Gill and I am the head of finance for Hughes Group. After graduating from the University of York I took some time off before heading into the world of work! I joined an expedition to conduct marine surveys and analysing the ecological status of coral reef systems.
Upon my return I trained as a Chartered Accountant in Thame, Oxfordshire working with small and medium sized businesses based in the Thames Valley and London region. My training contract provided me with a broad work experience in audit, accounts preparation, corporate and personal tax (including PAYE), VAT, management accounting, training and systems development, forecasting and company secretarial work.
A year after completing my training contract I moved to a company engaged in national and international property investment and development. As well as building on my knowledge of UK accounts and tax, I gained lots of experience of bank financing, overseas transactions, foreign currencies, and VAT and tax in other EU countries. I was also involved with property management and managed a portfolio of assets covering residential properties, pubs, offices and shopping centres.
After 11 years I decided it was time to leave London and work closer to home. Hughes Group was the natural choice for me as it has allowed me to stay within the property industry, build experience with the construction projects and use my prior property finance knowledge to head up the finance side of the company.
